The Journal Tech Practicum is a specialized engineering track for technologists, librarians, and publishers who want to move beyond manual PDF production and build the automated, XML-first infrastructure required for global research impact.
The Objective: Build the Pipeline
This is an operational practicum, not a theoretical seminar. You aren’t here to discuss the future of Open Access; you are here to engineer the systems that make it possible.
The Outcome: You will leave this practicum with a fully functional, automated publishing pipeline: from JATS-compliant ingestion to structured, index-ready metadata outputs.
What You Will Master
- JATS XML Architecture: Move beyond “conversion services.” Learn to treat JATS XML as the canonical source of truth for all scholarly content, ensuring long-term interoperability.
- Automated Production Workflows: Eliminate unneeded labor. We teach you how to build system-driven environments where formatting and metadata extraction are automated, not manual.
- Index-Ready Engineering: Learn the surgical technical requirements of global databases like DOAJ, Scopus, and Web of Science. Ensure your metadata is valid and your system is discoverable by default.
- Systemic Integrity & Preservation: Design workflows that prioritize data uniformity. Build archives that are clean, standardized, and engineered for permanence.
- Sovereign Infrastructure: Learn to deploy and manage institutional publishing layers (OJS/OMP) without becoming dependent on “black-box” corporate vendors.
